Honour-based abuse

Honour based abuse

Honour based abuse can take many forms, but is almost always 'hidden' abuse that is committed to protect the 'honour' of a family, or community.

Types of honour-based abuse

There is no one type of honour-based abuse, it can take many forms and can happen for many 'reasons'.

It is never okay and there is no justifiable reason to abuse another human being, in any way, shape or form.

Below are just some of the ways honour-based abuse can present itself.

Physical abuse

Forced marriage

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

Honour killing (murder)

Sexual abuse

Isolation from

friends / family

Financial abuse

Isolation from outside

world / telephone /

internet

Are you experiencing honour-based abuse?

Are you being threatened, or abused because you have tried to;

  • Have a relationship/marry someone from outside of your community / family's wishes
  • Refuse a marriage that is being arranged for you
  • Divorce from a marriage you are unhappy in
  • Wear clothes that are deemed inappropriate by your family / community
  • Access education
  • Gain employment
  • Follow a different religion / disagree with a religious ideology

If you have answered yes to any of the above, you may be suffering honour-based abuse.

You are not alone.

Training

Are you a frontline professional that might benefit from learning more about honour-based abuse, the signs to spot and how best to support those who are suffering?

We work closely with agencies across the UK, and internationally, to help them gain a better understanding of the signs to spot, and the experience of victims.

Our aim is to provide training to address the lack of awareness within local authorities and private sector organisations, who are in a position to identify and support potential victims facing honour abuse.

To ensure the needs of South Asian Communities are met, we provide specialist training to raise awareness of 'hidden abuse' - providing support in a safe, practical and empowering way.

We also work with schools, colleges, and universities to ensure that staff and students have the best support.

Get in touch today to discuss how our training may help you turn that one chance, into change.
